Reading Kohl I can now understand more why children don't want to learn in the classroom. If the teachers are not encouraging them and putting them down why would they want to learn? I wouldn't, I would just sit at the desk and do whatever I wanted. I feel bad that these children are not getting the education they deserve. They will either stay back or get pushed through the system, most likely get pushed through. The story about Barry was kind of sad. He was scared to learn how to read and his previous teacher was not encouraging to him at all. It makes me think of our service learning and how some of the teachers in the schools were in are the same way. It seems like they don't want to deal with the children, the teachers have the "they won't amount to anything so why bother" attitude.
I found Kohn was very interesting. I liked reading the phsychology aspect of why or why not we should do things. It makes sense why we should not say "good job" I agree with Kohn that it makes it seem we are manipulating them to do what we want and what is convenient for us. I think the same goes for reprimanding children too. There are certain ways to do it without making is seem like you are manipulating them.
Both of these pieces were well written and I leaned a lot from them.
